French Red Wines

Chateâux of Bordeaux - Premier Grand Cru Classé

We here at Elegant-Lifestyle thought that venturing into wine it might be a good idea to start at the top. Therefore, we decided to start with the top five French red wines of the 1855 Bordeaux ‘Premier Cru Classe’ classification. If you would like to follow our trip on the map, the Wine Atlas from Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson is the best bet. The 1855 'Premier Cru Classe' grouping originally only consisted of 4 top wines. The fifth wine was only added in 1973 when the 'Mouton Rothschild' was elevated to 'Premier Cru Classe'. Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book clearly confirms the ratings and all of these wines receive their four star top ranking in the book. And as we think that the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, which originated during the reign of Napoleon III,  was made to secure the most important British claret clients, who could be better positioned than a Brit like Hugh Johnson to judge that little has changed over the past 150 years?

This article on the top French red wines of the Bordeaux region, which are called 'Premier Grand Cru Classe' (or also written as '1er Grand Cru Classe', which means 'first class') will be the first in a series of articles on elegant top wines that will take a look at the best wines in the world. The famous 5 French Chateaux (French for 'castle') of Bordeaux are: 1. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild (Pauillac), 2. Chateau Latour (Pauillac),  3. Chateau Margaux (Margaux),  4. Chateau Mouton-Rothschild (Pauillac) and 5. Chateau Haut-Brion (Pessac, Graves). The name in brackets denotes the exact wine-growing area within the Bordeaux region. If you would like to learn the 'famous five' by heart, the following is a good aide-memoire: "La-La-Ma-Mo-Ha". We will keep to this order:
